Carol Ann OD-2r head + matching 1x12 cab
Some amplifier builders become iconic for their unconventional, bold creations. Alan Phillips and his line of Carol Ann amplifiers have already reached legendary status. Borrowing from the epic Dumble amplifier design, Carol Ann amps are known for pristine, 3-D-like cleans and overdrive tones that deliver harmonic bliss and saturation. They are transparent, responsive, and wonderfully loud in a controllable way.
OD-2R is a downsized version of OD-2, an amp that was presented in 2009 NAMM and impressed Joe Bonamassa so much, that he decided to design his signature model, JB100, with Alan Philips. In the words of the Author:
The OD channel is like a very complex Marshall tone but without any line of sight harshness or buzziness. It's a little harder to play than the Tuc, but if you're having a good day this amp is your best friend. On a bad playing day, it will tend to give you the finger and let the audience know you suck.
Since the release of the OD2r I have had requests for an amp to be made with an effects loop. Due to the amount of available space in the chassis and the ultra-low noise requirements on the 'r' because it's a recording amp, I decided not to mess with that amp, but make a 6L6 version of the OD-2. I have gone with a transformer set thats somewhat different than what you would normally find on a D-style 6L6 amp.
The OD-2 6L6 version has cleans that are more shimmering than the EL34 version with a little more compression. The OD tone is extremely vocal and string seperation is so prominent it's kind of strange (in a good way) when you first play it.
Joe Bonamassa uses a 6L6 variation of the OD-2 as his lead amp now in his US rig and has got me to convert his very first EL34 amp to 6L6 to use in his European rig.
I have now made the 6L6 version of the OD2 available as a production model at the same price as the EL34 version.
The EL34 version is still the best for rock, but the 6L6 is ultra dynamic and definately smoother than the EL34.
For the record, the 6L6 version isn't just a tube swap. The transformers are different, the PI is different and the preamp has some changes to make best use of the different characteristics of the power tubes.
This particular version is a customized version of OD2r: can take 6L6 as well as 6V6 tubes and features an amazing effects loop, which serves as an additional master volume for the amp. You can either use it with effects or without to have two levels of volume for your stage use, or tame the overall volume for bedroom playing.
There's another great perk to it - you can stack clean and overdriven channels for additional boost. Overdrive becomes very fluid, and compressed while retaining clarity with every note.
The matching cabinet features an original Electro Voice EVM12L, the one and only proper speaker for the amp. Together the stack delivers the clarity, grit, punch, and dimension of the tone and cuts through the mix second to none.
There's one downside: you will hear everything in your playing, whether you like it or not.
