Die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Steve Lukather und Ernie Ball Music Man begann Ende der 1990er-Jahre, nachdem Valley Arts (zuvor von Steve unterstützt) an Samcik verkauft worden war und die Qualität nachgelassen hatte. Die Luke 3 ist die neueste Version von Lukathers Signature-Modell mit einem etwas größeren Korpus und Hals, DiMarzio Transition Pickups und der gleichen, unbestreitbaren EBMM-Verarbeitungsqualität.
BFR steht für Ball Family Reserve und unterscheidet sich von der Standardversion durch einen Mahagoniblock im Erlenkorpus, der für einen kräftigeren Klang sorgt, der durch die Ahorndecke ausgeglichen wird. Aus eigener Erfahrung wissen wir, dass sie deutlich resonanter ist als die reguläre Version und ein langes Sustain bietet. Diese Gitarre befindet sich in einem hervorragenden optischen Zustand und ist technisch einwandfrei. Ihr Fokus liegt auf den Mitten, anstatt auf dem glockenklaren Stratocaster-Sound. Dennoch behält sie ihre Klarheit und den druckvollen Single-Coil-Sound in den ersten Positionen und liefert mit dem Steg-Humbucker einen dominanten Rock-Charakter.
