A wide bevelled edge over a substantial body means the pick doesn't flex at all: every bit of your right-hand energy goes into the string. That is why thick picks suit shredding, alternate picking and jazz — the note starts exactly when you decide it does. The bevel keeps the bass from disappearing, which is the usual complaint about 2 mm-plus picks.
