Tube WorkShop Cali Sunset Stack (Tube Amplifier Head + 2x12" Cab)
Tube Workshop Cali Sunset Stack – Hot Rodded Plexi, Modern Manners
Most Plexi-inspired amps try to sound like a Plexi. The Cali Sunset tries to sound like the records – the LA metal, arena rock, and hair-metal albums cut in the late '80s where a hot-rodded Marshall met a boutique modification and produced a tone that has been chased ever since. Tube Workshop's answer isn't a reissue and isn't a clone. It's an original 18W circuit that captures the aggression, feel, and singing sustain of that era with modern manners: a real gain control, a master volume that actually works, and an FX loop that belongs there.
This amp is for players who love the Plexi voice but not the Plexi compromises: no jumping input jacks, no all-or-nothing volume, no sound that only comes alive at wall-shaking levels. If you want that hot-rodded Marshall sound at rehearsal, in the studio, and at gigs – with the ability to bring pedals into the loop without killing your tone – this is your amp. Paired with the matching 2x12 Vertical XL cabinet, it delivers punch, definition, and headroom well beyond its 18-watt rating.
The Sound
A classic Plexi needs to be pushed hard to distort; the Cali Sunset gets there with an additional preamp tube stage, so you have full gain and full authority without full stadium volume. The character is unmistakable: aggressive high mids, tight and articulate lows, singing sustain, and that specific "chewy" pick response Plexi lovers know. Where it departs from the original is in usability – the EQ is far more effective, the master is genuinely quiet-capable, and the two independent gain boosts open doors a stock Plexi will never reach.
The preamp runs 3x 12AX7 into a cathode-biased 2x EL84 output section with an EZ81 tube rectifier, producing 18W RMS. Enough for any club stage and studio, and – through the Vertical XL 2x12" Cab – considerably louder than the wattage suggests.
A Preamp Built for Real Life
Instead of Plexi's four inputs and jumper-cable rituals, the Cali Sunset gives you one input and four switches that shape the basic voice:
- Deep switch: adds low-end weight to the preamp; leave it off and boost the bass control instead for the tightest possible high-gain response.
- Bright switch: boosts highs before distortion – aggressive, singing top end. Leave it off and shape the highs post-distortion with the treble control for a smoother, more polished lead voice.
- Boost switch: pushes the additional tube stage harder while tightening the bass, and – because it's positioned before the Hot stage – it also drives more signal into the Hot circuit for cascaded gain.
- Hot switch: inspired by the legendary Jose Arredondo mod, this adds clipping diodes for a smooth, bouncy gain boost with the "hair" and feel of a hot-rodded '80s Marshall – and unlike the original circuit, the TWS version doesn't lose volume when engaged.
Mix and match to your taste. Nothing about this preamp requires you to compromise.
A Custom EQ That Actually Does Something
Original Plexi tone controls are famously narrow in usable range. The Cali Sunset's EQ is retuned for far broader response – capable of everything from scooped modern metal (mids under 12) to authentic classic Plexi (mids above 12). Bass sits after the distortion for tight, powerful low end. Treble sits after the distortion too – complementing rather than duplicating the Bright switch. Presence sharpens or softens the power stage. For single coils, push the mids slightly for definition without harshness.
The WonderVol Master
The Plexi master-volume problem is well known: put it before the phase inverter and you lose gain feel; put it after (PPIMV), and you lose the presence control at low volumes. The Cali Sunset solves this by placing the master where the extra preamp stage makes it possible – so the master doesn't scrub your distortion voice and presence remains fully active at any level. On top of that is the TWS WonderVol, the loudness-compensated master from the 2864-S: full, alive tone at bedroom levels, with a control range that resolves finely where you need it. Full '80s LA lead tone at conversational volume is not marketing – it's what this amp actually does.
A Real FX Loop – Not a Placeholder
Most Plexi-style amps can't have a proper FX loop because the phase inverter itself produces so much of the distortion. The Cali Sunset has enough gain upstream that the FX loop sits after all your drive tones and before the master, so reverb, delay, and modulation land where they belong – behind the distortion – and the master still controls everything, effects included. Serial, lossless, and where it matters.
Built Like Laboratory Equipment
Every Cali Sunset is handcrafted in Leingarten, Germany. A 2mm aluminum chassis houses a heavy-duty, high-end PCB with a 70μm copper coating, hand-wired with premium components and top-tier transformers. All audio and power connections are soldered – no plug connectors that loosen with the years. The 12mm Baltic birch plywood cabinet is roadworthy, resonance-tuned, and under 9 kg – built to travel. Switchable mains voltage (110-120V / 220-240V) means it works on almost any grid, anywhere.
The 2x12 Vertical XL Cabinet – The Right Partner
The cabinet finishes the sound. Tube Workshop's Vertical XL 2x12 is built from 18mm Baltic birch plywood with a low-resonance construction that stays tight at any volume. The XL format adds punch and perceptible loudness beyond a standard 2x12. The speaker pairing is deliberate: a Celestion G12M-65 Creamback for warm, dense midrange, combined with a Celestion Vintage 30 for cutting aggression and air in the top end. Together, they cover the full sonic footprint of the era this amp was designed to celebrate.
