Tube WorkShop 2864-S Combo
Tube Workshop 2864-S Combo – Purity as a Philosophy
Most boutique amps add features. The TWS 2864-S removes them. There is no classic tone control network in the signal path – the signal passes through as few components as absolutely necessary, based on Tube Workshop's founding discovery: a restored 1940s Philips hi-fi amplifier whose circuit sounded so extraordinary it became the blueprint for the whole company. The 2864-S re-engineers that circuit around readily available tubes, so you get the magic without hunting rare glass.
This amp is for players who treat the amplifier as an instrument: pedal platform users, studio players, and tone purists who value dynamics, resolution, and string separation over channels and gain stages. It has no reverb and no effects loop – your pedals go in front, and the amp stays out of your way. If that sentence excites you rather than worries you, keep reading.
The Sound
Unusually clear, full clean tone – including at low volumes, where most tube amps turn nasal and flat. Pushed harder, it transitions smoothly into crunch: the signal stays stable while the top end melts into distortion without losing contour. Distortion focuses in the high-mids while bass and treble stay clear and localizable at any volume – which is why single notes stay three-dimensional and chords never collapse into mush.
The EF86 pentode preamp delivers richer harmonic content and more headroom than a typical 12AX7 front end; a hand-picked 12AX7 phase inverter, cathode-biased 6V6 pair (14W Class A/B), and GZ34 tube rectifier add natural compression and touch-responsive feel. And when 14 watts is still too much, the Hot/Warm switch drops the output power for cranked power-amp tones at rehearsal and home volumes.
The WonderVol
The standout innovation. Ordinary master volumes have a tiny usable range – too quiet on 2, too loud on 3. The TWS WonderVol is a loudness-compensated master positioned directly before the power amp that continuously corrects for how human hearing changes at low volume. The result: full, lively tone at living-room levels, with a finely resolved control path exactly where you need it. Reviewers have called it the most exciting master volume concept in years.
Smart, Minimalist Controls
A 3-position bass switch sits at the very start of the signal path, tightening lows before any clipping occurs – no muddy buildup downstream. The treble control works in the power amp, shaping the final voice. Preamp gain, WonderVol, Hot/Warm switch, and a 4/8/16 ohm impedance selector for any external cabinet complete the panel. Nothing in the way.
Built Like Laboratory Equipment
Every 2864-S is handcrafted in Leingarten, Germany: hand-wired point-to-point with the shortest possible signal paths, every connection soldered – no plug connectors that loosen over time – with hand-picked components and premium transformers. Reviewers who opened it up called the workmanship six-star. The generously sized cabinet in solid 12mm birch multiplex is tuned into the amp's voice – its resonance is deliberately part of the sound, not just the housing.
