So vieles an dieser Gitarre schreit förmlich: Custom Shop. Sie basiert zwar auf der Telecaster von 1960, geht aber gleichzeitig in viele neue Richtungen. Doppeltes Binding, Closet Classic Finish mit Nitrolackrissen und abgenutzter Halsrückseite. Der Korpus ist gealtert und leicht verfärbt (Sonic Blue). Er besteht übrigens aus Erle. Diese Gitarre ist nichts für Traditionalisten, sondern für alle, die etwas Ungewöhnliches, Markantes und Besonderes suchen.
Das Coolste daran ist ihr spielerischer Klang und wie angenehm sie in der Hand liegt. Man vergisst sofort, dass Telecaster-Gitarren einen nicht konturierten Korpus haben. Der Hals hat eine schöne, volle ovale C-Form, ist aber nicht zu klobig.
Zu guter Letzt – die Tonabnehmer. Der Fender Custom Shop hat für dieses Modell eine speziell gewickelte Seymour Duncan-Kombination aus einem P90 3B-Tonabnehmer am Hals und einem Billy Gibbons Esquire-Tonabnehmer am Steg verwendet. Die beiden klingen grundverschieden: Der P90 ist heiß und fett, sehr straff und druckvoll. Der Steg-Tonabnehmer hingegen hat einen bissigen, texanischen Mittenbereich. Beide sind kräftig, beide sind völlig unterschiedlich, aber überraschenderweise – in Kombination – setzen sie sich gegen alles durch, was ihnen im Weg steht.
